Actuaries chief steps down
The chief executive of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries has announced she will step down at the end of February 2011. Caroline Instance has been involved with the profession for nearly nine years, working alongside 10 presidents of its predecessor bodies, the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland and the Institute of Actuaries. Instance will continue to work for the institute on a consultancy basis during 2011. She will be officially employed until the end of April, during which time she will assist the president, Ronnie Bowie, in representing the UK actuarial profession at home and abroad.

Thompson joins from International SOS, while Bochko was recruited from Aon Consulting. Vamadeva joins from the health and risk practice at HSBC, and Harris from Mercer’s expatriate consulting team. Wright moves across from Aon Hewitt and was previously UK outsourcing sales leader at Mercer. She will be based in Glasgow.

Houtteville ‘key hire’ for Gartmore
Vincent Houtteville has joined Gartmore as an investment analyst. He leaves First State Investments, where he was a global financial services analyst; it is anticipated he will start his new role in early 2011. Houtteville has also held analyst roles at Axa Investment Management covering European financials, and with Scudder Stevens Clark in New York.
He will be part of Gartmore’s emerging markets team, which in addition to Chris Palmer, includes managers Jan de Bruin, head of Asian equities and Charlie Awdry, head of Chinese equities. The team manages £2.9bn of assets. Palmer said: “This is a key hire that demonstrates our commitment to this ever-growing and hugely influential asset class.” CT

NAPF council elects duo
The National Association of Pensions Funds (NAPF) has appointed Sally Bridgeland and Joyce Martindale to its investment council. During the investment council’s meetings, Bridgeland and Martindale will contribute their views on the public policy agenda, such as the 2012 pensions reform. The 19-strong council meets six times a year. Bridgeland is chief executive of BP Pension Trustees, where she monitors its in-house fund management and administration teams. Her role involves developing recommendations for policy and strategy.

Clive Gilchrist has stepped down as managing director of Bestrustees to focus on client work, having held the post since he set the business up in 1992. He was formerly with Aviva Health, where he was finance and commercial director. In his new role, Rix will be responsible for the life and pensions actuarial pricing teams, the development of the wider life business unit strategy and will also contribute to group-wide initiatives. This announcement follows the recent strengthening of LV’s life and pensions team, with the appointment of Mark Jones, head of protection; Liz Timms, head of retirement sales; Ian Bell, head of retirement, customer experience; and Lisa Mundy, head of protection, customer experience.

Duo boosts benefits firm
Employee benefits consultancy Lorica has appointed Sean Gilfeather and James Biggs.
Gilfeather will head the consultancy’s newly established actuarial and risk management team, while Biggs will serve as corporate pension consultant for Lorica’s pensions division.
Gilfeather is a qualified actuary with 15 years’ experience in pensions and employee benefits. He was previously head of the business development and actuarial team at Buck Consultants in Scotland, and corporate consultant and client manager at Aegon.
“I am really looking forward to the challenge of opening up a fresh new area of business for Lorica,” said Gilfeather. “We aim to provide an innovative and refreshing approach to helping sponsors and trustees manage and reduce the risks associated with final salary pension schemes.”
Employee benefits and pensions expert Biggs was previously with Jelf Employee Benefits, where he headed up the defined contribution pensions team. He said his primary goal at Lorica is to “take pensions education to the world and break the myth that they are boring”.
Biggs has also held several positions at Hargreaves Lans-down, and prior to this he was corporate consultant at Axa Corporate Solutions.
Rhys Francis, director of Lorica Consulting’s independent financial adviser division, said: “James’s sound judgment and pragmatic approach will help our clients enormously.”
Of Gilfeather, he added: “Sean has the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the practical solutions that both employers and trustees need so badly.”

LV has appointed Richard Rowney as managing director of its life and pensions business. He took over the role on March 1, moving from his previous position of group chief operating officer. Rowney has been at LV since 2007, after joining from Barclays, where he held several senior positions. Mike Rogers, LV group chief executive, said: “We’re very pleased to have had an ideal candidate who we could appoint internally, to help us achieve continuity and an immediate transition. As a main board member of LV, Richard has been able to build up a good understanding of our life and pensions business and has contributed significantly to the turnaround of the LV group over the last three years.” Rowney was appointed to the LV board in August 2007, and has taken over the managing directorship of LV’s life business from Rodney Cook, who moves to Just Retirement in July.

Specialist defined benefit consultant Grove Pensions Solutions has appointed industry veteran Steve Delo as chair of its governance and risk management committee.
Delo is also chief executive of independent trustee company PAN Governance, and is a former chairman of the Pensions Management Institute.
Ken Tymms, corporate pensions manager at Grove Pensions, described the committee as a “powerhouse”, adding that Delo’s appointment was “a good match to our ethos”.
Delo added: “A governance committee that sits between the advisers, providers and pension manager can ensure best practice as far as possible.”
